2013 Club Round 1

Max Tobin  – Club Round 1

Fun waves off Kirra Point for KSC’s first club round of the year held on Sunday, 3rd February 2013.

The early low tide and offshore winds saw some fast 3-4ft barrels push through the contest area giving all competitors in the early rounds of the Cadets and Juniors a taste of the “Kirra of old.”

However the strong sweep, early on, saw some of the younger cadets struggling to maintain their position in the lineup resulting in some competitors missing waves altogether as they were swept down the lineup toward North Kirra.

Progressing through to the semi’s of the cadets with some smart surfing were Blaine, Josh, Dylan, Zac, Pauly, Nathan, Blair & Lewis.

Blaine & Josh progressed from Semi 1 to the  cadet final with some great carves and snaps on their backhand. They were joined in the final by fellow goofy Pauly who reeled off some nice turns in Semi 2 along with Nathan who was blasting his way down the line with some powerful forehand surfing.

In the Junior division Max & Blaine dominated their respective semi’s with some progressive surfing to make the final. They were joined by Dylan, who scored an 8 point ride after reeling off 8 backhand snaps on one wave, and Blair who made the most of his first junior division hit out with some long waves and plenty of turns to also make the final.

The cadet finalists then hit the water with Blaine and Nathan taking the majority of the best waves to outpoint their rivals. However Blaines superior backhand snap delivered him the points to take the win from Nathan who was a close 2nd with some power hacks. Josh and Pauly also surfed well but could only manage one good wave each which left them in 3rd & 4th respectively.

As the tide filled in, the wave at the top of the point became more rippable, allowing the Open division surfers the chance to  display a full repertoire of powerful & progressive surfing. Max, competing for the first time in the Open division, dominated the final with plenty of fin free manoeuvres and carves to take home the win.

Chris came a close 2nd with a great display of vertical hacks on what looked to be a 5’4″ Simmons retro short board model from Diverse, which flowed well in the Trestles like  conditions. Ed, Luke and Sam took out 3rd, 4th & 5th respectively with at least one good wave each but not a back up wave to help their cause.

The Masters finally got their turn to showcase what skills they have and strong surfing by Paul, Mike, Phil & Dave saw them make the final as the point became deserted of recreational surfers. Phil took the early lead by sitting closer to the shore than the others and picking off the mid sized sets which seemed to hold up longer than the bigger ones. This strategy paid off with Phil taking home the win with Paul close in 2nd, followed by Mike & Dave who both struggled to get any more than one good wave.

The Junior finalists were up next & were excited to have the wave to themselves. Max dominated this final with his power and fitness, linking multiple & varied turns on the longest set waves to take the win from Dylan, Blair & Blaine (N/S) (who placed 2nd to 4th respectively). A great effort by both Dylan and Blair though to make their first ever Junior division final.

Most frothing grom of the round went to 10 year old Luke Vidler who not only helped out but also enjoyed some free surfing during the comp when unfortunately no other groms turned up to compete against him. Luke took home a cool Volcom hat which did not leave his head after it was presented to him. Well done Luke.

Thanks again to Volcom for the prizes which were shared across the surfers in each division,

Also thanks to David Still who presented each division winner with a copy of his new self published book, titled “It’s Our Erath Too”.

Finally thanks to all the parents and kids who judged across the day and Jenny, Amy and the crew for preparing and cooking the BBQ to feed the hungry surfers & judges.
