Sammy Clift – Kirra Surfriders, on his way to winning heat 47

The world’s largest inter-club surfing teams event, the Volcom Kirra Teams Challenge, continued at D’bah today with wind blown 3-4ft waves on offer.

In strong NW winds, Australia’s top boardriders battled it out in the remaining heats of Round 3, before completing Round 4 and starting Round 5 of the prestigious event. Defending event champions D-Bah Boardriders and fellow Gold Coast club Snapper Surfriders are the frontrunners heading into the final day of competition, accumulating 21-points respectively with six of their eight surfers having completed their heats.

Le-Ba and Coolum Boardriders are close behind on 20-points each, with Kirra Surfriders and Cabarita Boardriders on 19-points.

In one of the heats of the day, D-Bah Boardriders surfer Nick Vasicek dispatched of Nathan Webster (North Narrabeen Boardriders), Josh Fuller (Cabarita Boardriders) and Matt Phillips (Maroubra Surfriders).

Vasicek, backhand blasted his way to a heat-winning 13.50 two-wave total, easily defeating Webster (11.10), Fuller (10.54) and Phillips (7.40). The powerful goofy foot is upbeat about his club’s chances heading into the final day of competition. “We’re in about the same position as last year, so we have to win a few more heats to be in the mix,” said Vasicek.

In one of the closest heats of the day Brent Dorrington from D-Bah, edged out Blake Ainsworth (Snapper), Corey Ziems (Kirra) and Tom Donohue (Maroubra Surfriders) with a last minute drop wallet snap that catapulted him from 3rd to 1st in controversial circumstances.

Today’s other standout surfers included Dave Reardon-Smith (Coolum Boardriders), who notched a 11.66 two-wave total to beat Chris Bennetts (North End Boardriders), Trevor Gleave (Kingscliff Boardriders) and Lloyd Bowen (Werri Boardriders), as well as Reardon-Smith’s fellow team member Simon Knox, who accrued a heat winning 14.77 total.

Kirra’s Sammy Clift was also a standout in one of the last heats of the day to take home another win for the Kirra club placing them only 2 points away from the lead coming into the final day of the event.
