Kirra Team Excel at Australian Boardriders Battle National Finals

Kirra team and support crew

Congratulations to the Kirra Surfriders team of Andre Teixeira, Max Tobin, Sam Clift, Dylan Totten and Brittani Nicholl for amazing surfing at the National Finals of the Australian Boardriders Battle held across the 24th and 25th of January 2015 at Cronulla, NSW.

Kirra had previously secured their position in the elite 20 boardriders club only, finals weekend with a 4th placing out of the 12 clubs that competed at the Queensland state qualifiers in October 2014.

The finals weekend started well for the team with Kirra’s Brittani Nicholl winning her women’s heat, $1000 and 1000 valuable points for the Kirra team on Saturday. All team surfers then competed in the first round of the tag team event and accumulated a strong combined score with power surfer Andre Teixeira then posting a final wave score of 8.67 to secure the teams progression to the quarter finals on the Sunday.

Sunday dawned with a smaller swell at Cronulla and Kirra’s quarter final opponents in the tag team were Phillip Island as well as the highly fancied Point Lookout and Le-ba teams whose surfers included world tour competitors Bede Durbidge and Adam Melling respectively. With only the top two teams progressing to the semi finals, Kirra were the underdogs in this quarter.

After a slow start Kirra leapt into second place when Max Tobin posted a strong wave score that was higher than any of the Le-Ba team riders could achieve. Sam, Dylan and Brittani then kept Kirra in second place with solid scores, with power surfer Andre also posting a good score and finishing the heat with 5 minutes to spare. Kirra’s final combined score left Le-Ba’s final surfer Adam Melling requiring an almost excellent score in the deteriorating conditions which eventually was not achievable. Kirra were through to the Semi Finals of the tag team!!

The Semi’s pitted Kirra against Coffs Harbour and Bondi, with the top two teams to progress to the Final. Kirra’s team were again able to post good scores to maintain second place for the majority of the semi however Bondi’s final surfer and world qualifying series competitor, Perth Standlick, posted an excellent score leaving Kirra’s final surfer Andre requiring a near perfect 10 to maintain 2nd place, which eventually proved impossible in the small conditions.

In the end Kirra’s young team achieved a great result = 5th in the teams event out of the 20 teams competing in the finals. They exceeded all expectations for a team without any current or ex world tour surfers in it, up against the strongest clubs in Australia. This experience will give this young team extra confidence going into next year’s Battle. Also congrats to the Kirra team manager Paul Posadas in his first year managing the team and for all the supporters that travelled to Sydney to encourage the team and those at home watching on Fox Sports and online. Great work! Yeeooww!!
