Mick Fanning Wins Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach

Mick fanning rings the bell

Congrats to Mick Fanning for winning the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach today with unbelievable surfing all day. Mick’s win at Bells sees him move to No.3 in the 2014 ASP world title race in his quest for a 4th World title.

Fanning emerged from his slow start to the year in emphatic fashion by defeating Burrow by 16.83 points to 13.46 in the final. The semi-finals and final of the contest were shifted from Bells to nearby Winkipop to capitalise on pristine waves. Burrow posted the highest individual score of the decider with a 9.63 but needing a 7.2 for the final ten minutes, he was unable to find the wave he needed.

Fanning leapt from 11th to third on the world rankings. “This is a special one for me,” Fanning said. “The first ever trip away I did was down here at Bells when I was 15 or 16. I’ve been coming back every year. Bells is the only thing I know about Easter. I was so nervous in that final. Those last nine minutes were so nerve-racking. I think those first two events this year, I didn’t really hit the reset button hard enough.”

Today’s win was Fanning’s third at Bells Beach.

The 32-year-old won his first tour title as a wildcard at Bells way back in 2001 and also saluted at the iconic Victorian break in 2012. Fanning advanced to the final by recording the highest two-wave score of the competition (18.20) in his semi-final over countryman Julian Wilson.

Fanning has now moved to third in the world title race behind Brazilian Gabriel Medina and Australian Joel Parkinson after three of 11 events.

Well done Mick and good luck for the rest of the year, from all the crew at the Kirra Surfriders Club. Yeeeeowww!!

Day 3 – 2014 Kirra Teams Challenge

Merewether team, with Jesse Adams in red, celebrating their 2014 Kirra Teams Challenge Win

A very tough day of surfing for day 3, the final day of competition for the 2014 Kirra Teams Challenge, held at Kirra Point, with howling Northerly winds battering competitors all day, and a heavy swell that was breaking from miles out the back of Kirra on the sets. With 24 heats left to run, the Contest Director called that the heats would be 20 minutes long with the best one wave counted for each surfer to determine heat winners.

The surfers from every club competing across the final day, put on a brave and sometimes stella performance to thrill the crowd and often post some very high scores.
