Day one of the 2012 Volcom Kirra Teams Challenge kicked off today at D’bah in conditions better than were originally expected, with two to four foot peaks breaking across the beach.

The potential for high scores was abundant and the opportunities were utilised by surfers from all clubs, particularly the younger contingent. Among the notable surfers was twelve year old Ethan Ewing from the Point Lookout club of North Stradbroke island, fifteen year old Jackson Baker from Merewether and sixteen year old Luke Hynd, who earned the highest heat score of the day with a two wave total of 16.7.

Amongst the more experienced crew, Samba Mann from D’bah Board riders annihilated the waves to also receive one of the highest heat scores of the day. Aerial specialist Chippa Wilson, from Cabarita Beach managed to maintain a healthy air flow between his board and the waves several times during his heat.

At the end of the day North Shelly of the Central Coast were in the lead out on their own, with three wins. The usual suspects trailed behind including Snapper and Kirra but the dark horse and surprise for all the tents on the sand was the Long Reef club finishing the day in second place.

Another great day of waves is expected tomorrow with the likes of current and former WCT surfers Keiron Perrow and Chris Davidson as well as 2011 World Junior Champion Jack Freestone all surfing for their clubs.
